MR. WILSON

MR. WILSON

When we merge with our dreams, we can break molds and reinvent the way things are done and perceived. Mr. Wilson is revolutionizing the misconceptions around teaching and Street Art, introducing this movement in his classroom at John A. Ferguson Senior High and into the school system, harmonizing this relationship with the colors of his creative soul.

Mr. Wilson is a multimedia artist and an art teacher (he prefers Art Coach) with over 25 years of experience, currently teaching at John A. Ferguson Senior High, in Miami, Florida. He’s the founder of Elevate, a nonprofit organization that bridges street art and schools in challenging communities. He’s bringing Wynwood West into the schools, focusing on beautifying the school- campus with hopes that the students see, feel, and experience street art right in their halls.

One of his favorite classes in elementary school was art. He used to draw soldiers, superheroes, and war zones, and at the age of 11, the hip-hop and break-dancing culture inspired him to pick up the spray-paint can. Soon thereafter he was executing murals throughout West-Miami. Art became his competitive sport, but it was still just a hobby. It wasn’t until his senior year in high school when he took an AP Art class that his true passion for art was ignited. “I wasn’t the most talented, but I was determined to outwork everyone.” Mr. Wilson remembers honing on new work ethic and focusing on fulfilling an artistic path for himself, going above and beyond, and working diligently to achieve his goals.

In a very short period of time, art became incredibly important for me,” smiles Mr. Wilson sharing that at age 17, he was helping classmates with concepts/ideas in his art class, realizing he was digging the “teaching thing” and by 20, he was a substitute teacher and there was no looking back.

He attended FIU (Florida International University) and earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts (in sculpture). By age 26, he was a full-time DCPS employee, teaching at Tucker Elementary School in Coconut Grove, Miami. After teaching at the elementary level for 2 years, he quickly carved the path to high school. Mr. Wilson wants students to be creative beyond any media, and he’s constantly on the move, making sure he accommodates all of them. Alumnus often reach out to him thanking him for his lessons and for opening their eyes to the healing power found in art.

For some time, Mr. Wilson hid the fact that he was an art teacher due to stigmas around being an educator among artists in the professional art world. But art is his passion. It is who he is. “Cut me open, I’m going to bleed -colors,” Mr. Wilson expresses that he now embraces the name and his role as an educator. “I’m Mr. Wilson in the classroom and on the streets!

Elevate broke ground in 2022 with Homestead Middle School, beautifying the space with 13 murals and counting: receiving appreciation from the students and staff members alike.

Children’s Home Society helped with the funding of materials, which helped him launch the project. Six months later, artists from around the country have participated, including Renda Writer, Marcos Conde, Alvin Surreal, and many more. Homestead Walls as he now calls it, represents the largest outdoor gallery in the DCPS South Region.

Mr. Wilson expresses his excitement in regard to continuing his efforts at Homestead Middle School. The next phase of the project involves hiring the current muralists to teach students in the afterschool program. This will “truly elevate the level of appreciation for the arts -for the entire student body.

Mr. Wilson aims to adopt more schools every year. You can stay up to date with all things Elevate by going to his website: elevateartsfoundation.com

Amongst the many impactful projects, Mr. Wilson has been commissioned to do some impressive murals at several locations in Miami, including Lincoln’s Beard Brewery and Strange Beast as well as at John A. Ferguson, where he currently teaches. In addition, one of Mr. Wilson’s biggest claims to fame is the curation of The Union Wall, at Lincoln’s Beard Brewing. It is an incredible project that features over 47 South Florida artists.

Wouldn’t it be great if art were the priority in our education system? Thanks to Mr. Wilson, schools are seeing how positive and transformational art is, especially Street Art. Teenagers who are in need of support and guidance are finding hope that they can do better if they give it a chance. Mr. Wilson is here to give them that chance and help Elevate their souls, cracking open their colors and inspiring them to #makearthappen.

“Can’t make it happen with your hands clean. Put the phone down and make art happen.” – Mr. Wilson

JOHN DOMINÉ

Photographer

When life gives us lemons, we better make a delicious and refreshing lemonade to share with everyone, and that is what John Dominé did during the collective challenge we experienced – and still are. John sought opportunities to expand his Creative Soul during the pandemic, reinventing how art in murals is interpreted. Oh, and did he reinvent it!

When we face drastic and abrupt upheavals, our perspective can shift to change our lifestyles—feeling cornered, and vulnerable to the unknown, pushes us to make important decisions. During these challenging times, John made one of the most magical decisions an artist can make: Fill the world with more art.

John Dominé is a professional photographer and mural art marionettist. His passion for photography started before digital cameras were invented. John has traveled the world capturing stunning shots, mainly of mural art. He has a way of showing the natural state of the moment, bringing out the artist’s genuine emotions and the sentiment behind the mural.

During the lockdown, John’s plans were locked up with him in his apartment in NYC. Thankfully, John was encouraged by his friend, Kalin Talbott, to participate in Tussen Kunst & Quarantine as well as the Getty Challenge. These projects encouraged John and Kalin to create art with items found around the house, sparking the idea of representing mural art.

After completing the challenges and still unable to travel across continents and fill his camera with smashing photos, John carried on with his friend’s brilliant idea of bringing the mural art to his home. How? By becoming the art in the murals himself as a marionette.

Choosing from his extensive gallery of murals from across the world, John decided to feature 365 artists in 365 days, including My Dog Sighs, Fin Dac and ROA. Initially, John used his artistic skills and painted the murals on his face, sharing a side-by-side picture of his recreation and a photo of the mural.

He then started giving the murals a broader representation using recycled boxes from all the online shopping that burst during the lockdown. John created marionettes out of the boxes to make the murals interactive.

To add more life to the mural, John puts on an off-the-chain performance, lip-syncing to songs that he feels have a connection with the street art he’s representing. His performances are outstanding, theatrical, and fun to watch, not to mention how similar he comes to the art in the murals. The videos are sure to awaken the energy of joy and make us carry a smile throughout the day. His current project, My Street Art Opera 2.0, is phenomenal and worth watching.

John is giving an honorable representation to all street artists and their alluring murals. He has received positive feedback from many of the artists he has featured through this beautiful project. He helps us distract from the chaos that our world is going through, and he inspires us to lighten up and keep creating, for it can be therapeutic.

Think outside the box!” John is encouraging us to try new things and not be afraid to take chances and make mistakes.

As we keep taking action, we keep evolving, and our art keeps transcending, and that’s how we help our world become a better place: when we are true to our Creative Souls and allow creativity to flow.

RENDA WRITER

RENDA WRITER

What are we doing with our words? Are we writing words that encourage or discourage? Creative Soul, Renda Writer, asks us to reflect on those questions. He motivates us to pause and consider how the words that we write affect our daily lives. Let me show you how Renda Writer uses his words to make a positive impact in this world, creating art with his handwriting.

Influenced by his passion for poetry and Hip-Hop music, Renda’s unique handwriting has led him to become a widely known artist. Originally from New York, it was in Miami that Renda found, not only a home but the stepping stone that made his career take-off. He received waves of acclamation during the 2014 Miami Art Basel for his mural, Love is a Risk, Do It Anyway, written 500,000 times across the mural for N’Namdi Contemporary Fine Art.

Renda Writer is a traveling artist creating murals at public and private venues. On a daily basis, people tag #RedaWriterArt with images in front of Renda’s murals from all across the continental U.S. – his art can also be found in Europe.

Renda does custom murals at residences, businesses, schools, and more. With his aesthetically pleasing handwriting, Renda turns walls, doors, corridors, bottles, lamps, and even motorcycles, to mention a few, into captivating pieces. His art can also be appreciated on apparel and canvases.

Feel Free to Feel Free, is one of my favorite quotes from Renda Writer, who has turned his art into statement pieces, inspiring us to take a look at who we are, what we are capable of, and how we interact with the rest of the world. His art encourages us to Be The Change We Want To See In The World

Amongst his most famous murals are: World Peace, Your Comfort Zone Will Kill You, George Floyd, Amor/Love, and Breonna Taylor, whose mural not only attracted the attention of the media, but he also created it on Breonna’s actual birthday (not planned). This validates that Renda Writer is here to change the world one handwritten mural at a time.

Renda strongly believes that art is good for healing, and we can certainly feel inspired to heal by his art and go within our hearts to find the light and turn it on. Renda’s handwritten words are reminders of the bright side of life, igniting us to use our words, and our art, as a positive statement for the whole world.
